Al-Madras

Al-Madras, meaning "oil press" in Arabic, is situated atop the mountain to the left of the Siq. It is approached by a typical rock-cut Nabataean stepped path carved in the sandstone. It encompasses remnants of various structures of numerous cult installations that are spread along the leveled crest of the mountains to the length of at least a hundred meters, including a high place, tricliniums, an oil press, many rock-cut votive niches of all forms and sizes, an open-air stibadium, and water cisterns. Al Madras holds its significance as one of Petra's primary suburbs, once serving as a Nabataean agricultural and cultic area near the Siq. Despite the passage of time, Al Madras still retains its Nabataean name, with an inscription found in one of its tricliniums referring to Dushara as the god of Al-Madras, which was dedicated as a sanctuary to its cult.
