Because of its breathtaking natural setting and historic rock-cut monuments, the Al Dayr Trail is regarded as one of Petra's most well-known hiking routes.
Beginning at the Qasr al-Bint stairway and ending at the Monastery, this trail spans approximately 1.6 kilometers, with an ascent of around 800 steps. While the hike demands a moderate level of fitness, it's not considered perilous. Hikers should wear sturdy footwear and comfortable clothing suitable for varied terrain and weather conditions. Carrying ample water, sunscreen, and a hat is advisable, especially during warmer months.
As hikers ascend, they'll encounter numerous archaeological marvels, including tomb facades, places of worship, betyl niches, and archaeological features dating back to the Nabataean and Byzantine eras. Significant points of interest along the path include the Lion Triclinium and the Wadi Kharruba Biclinium, adorned with ancient Nabataean decorations. The route also unveils hidden sanctuaries, such as those found in the Qattar al Dayr side valley, where Nabataean brotherhoods once gathered beneath rock overhangs.
For a truly enchanting experience, it's recommended to embark on the Al Dayr trail in the late afternoon, when the setting sun casts a warm glow upon the monumental rock facade of the monastery. This ancient route does not include only historical monuments but also breathtaking views of Petra's natural beauty and mountains.
